Bulimia is an eating disorder that affects approximately 1 percent to 3 percent of adolescents in the United States, with the illness usually beginning in late adolescence or early adult life. Symptoms of bulimia include eating a lot of food in a short amount of time (this is called bingeing) and then purging in an attempt to not gain weight. People with bulimia may purge by making themselves throw up or by taking laxatives, pills, or liquids that increase the rate at which food moves throughout the body.
